Oh look, the EFF making a mountain out of a molehill. Well, actually this is more like making a mountain out of a patch of flat lawn that could potentially contain a molehill but doesn't.

If you lease any car, and stop paying the lease fees, what happens? That's right, they come and take it away. Funny, that.

Nah, fuck the EFF spin. It's actually quite a good idea. Have a look at this, even if it is marketing stuff:

http://renault.co.uk/cars/electric-…

The battery leasing is pretty cheap - £70 a month - so if you're in a situation where you can't pay that, you're also in a situation where you ought to be selling your £10k+ car and driving something cheaper.

So what happens when a car manufacturer decides it's no longer going to maintain the authentication servers? Or if the servers go down... I'm sorry but I don't think there is any up side to having your car need to authenticate in order to run.

Sounds awesome. Running the risk of bricking your car if you ever decide to tinker with it or if you take it to a shop and they bork something.

They won't be allowed to do that while they're still leasing batteries to people. Might as well ask what happens when BMW turn up to remove the car you've paid outright for. It's just not how things work when you have a contract.

In any case, the idea that there's some sort of authentication going on doesn't seem to make any sense, or to be supported by anything Renault have said.

If you're going to be leasing, and you plan to pay what you owe, you should hardly object to something noninvasive that will help minimise the amount you're paying to cover other people's nonpayment.

Eh? How? If the battery stops working, they replace it. That's kind of the point of the leasing system, because Renault can't really say how battery life is going to work out long-term.

I can't imagine what kind of tinkering you'd try to do, but in any case you're not allowed to do that to a lease car whatever kind of powertrain it has.

Your car: yet another item in the long list of things you don't really own even after you've paid for it.
